Preventing Falls For Seniors

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for seniors? While not all of them result in injury, the numbers are staggering. With three million seniors being treated in the ER each year for falls, it’s important to understand the causes and how to prevent them. Here are some of the most common causes of falls and some tips to staying upright!

CAUSES

Lower Body Weakness

Let’s face it, you will never be able to completely remove the threat of falling in old age. That means that it’s that much more important to be able to recover after tripping. Strengthening your lower body is a great way to be able to lessen the damage or possibly prevent falls from happening altogether.

Medications

It’s important to understand which medications are going to effect your field of vision or balance. Some of these include tranquilizers, sedatives and antidepressants. So, if you’re taking any kind of medications and are afraid that they may be affecting your vision or balance, call your doctor to review the types of drugs you’re taking and the doses.

Vision

As we age, so do our eyes. This is why the American Optometric Association recommends that everyone over the age of 60 get their eyes checked annually.

TIPS

Remove Trip Hazards

If possible, try to avoid using any objects that are easy to trip over. Some of these trip hazards include door matts, rugs and extension cords.

Slip-proof Your Shower

Showers are one of the most dangerous areas of the home for seniors. To help establish balance, try installing a shower matt with grips on the bottom, along with a grab bar along the side of the wall.

Use a Bell On Your Pet’s Collar

As all pet lovers know, cats and dogs are great at being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Specifically, under our feet. To keep tabs on your pet, use a small bell on their collar!

Know When to Use a Cane or Walker

Canes and walkers are one of the most effective tools to combat weak lower body strength, knees or ankles. Ask your doctor if your Medicare coverage will cover durable medical equipment.
